Neiman Marcus is always on top of the newest trends and today their NM Trend Report email showed up where they call out lace as "Fall's Feminine Touch". After looking through the lace selections it was hard to not pay attention to the Red Valentino lace Juliet-Sleeve top. It's going on my "need to have" list.

I just got home from an amazing networking event at Spa Scotta. Not only did I get to meet up with some blogger friends that I haven't seen in awhile but I also got to check out the new Clairsonic items AND take them home! Life is Crazy

I have become MIA due to being so busy with work and haven't had much time for actual life... I know that sounds bad but it's actually been pretty fun. I've been working 10 hour plus days and by the time I get home I am exhausted so bear with me as I promise to get back into the swing of things with my blog and UFN.

Thankfully not much had really been going on fashion wise around here or else I'd be way behind...

I did find time today to get my hair done and take the dogs in to get groomed. Now I just need to get the house cleaned as it feels so disorganized and cluttery. Not a fun feeling to come home to but seriously I have no energy to clean.

My birthday was nice, even though I worked, they were so sweet and spoiled me all day. Hubby and I spent Friday night together for a belated b'day for me. We had sushi and saw Invictus, which was good. It was a nice night!! Then when we came home I laid on the couch to watch TV with Jeff and ended up waking up at 3:30am on the sofa - I fell right asleep and don't even remember when that happened. Crazy!

Well I hope you all are doing great and I'll have more to say later. :)

Yes, thats me... I have been such a blog slacker for the last few days. I started a new job and have been busy devoting all my energy to that. I promise to get back into the swing of things eventually.

My new job is really interesting. I am the assistant buyer for a new private sale website called Zulily. If you have kids, want kids, or even like them you should sign up! It's free!

Atty Clothing is a new t-shirt and hoodie line by local designer Ryan Atkins. His love of music, skateboarding and fashion led him to create this new line.

For his line, his "only design requirement is that it has been fun to work with and it has to enhance the brand in some way." Sounds like a great plan to me!

No worries ladies, a line is being planned for the near future for us as well. Hats and socks are also on the list!

De-Cluttering My Life... FINALLY!

Since Christmas has come and gone and I have gotten more stuff, I realized it's time to purge the things I have just sitting around not being used for anything. For some reason I like to buy things and not use them... Must be some weird disease or something as I do it often. NO MORE! For 2010 I want to have less stuff and only buy with purpose.

I have been trying to take pictures of some of the items that maybe I can sell, pocket change is never a bad thing! However I have tons more to donate and give away. So, if you are interested in any shoes, belts, handbags, etc check out my pictures. Just shoot me an email if you see anything you are interested in.

Glee Flash Mob in Italy!

The whole flash mob movement is pretty cool - I would love to be somewhere and witness something like this! This one is obviously been put together by Fox to promote Glee and keep the buzz going. It is an amazing show!

Mark off May 28, 2010 as BUSY! Sex & the City 2 hits theaters this summer - I can't stand it and I know a lot of you out there are just as excited as I am!

Also coming out around the same time as the movie is the book The Carrie Diaries.

Did you ever wonder how Carrie Bradshaw got to be so fabulous? Well now you can find out who Carrie was before the Manolos, in Candace Bushnell's latest books, The Carrie Diaries, set to be released April 27, 2010, just one month before the new SATC movie hits theaters.

The first in a two book series, The Carrie Diaries will chronicle Carrie Bradshaw's teen years, following her as she develops her fashion sense, creating trends only Carrie could make popular. The book will also go along for the ride of Carrie's first love, which is sure to explain how Ms. Bradshaw got her start in writing about her crazy relationships.

The most exciting thing will be who are Carrie's friends? Teenage Carrie means pre-Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, so will the new friends be mini-clones of the fab four? You'll just have to wait and see, as details on this book are slow coming. But for those who have a hard time waiting, here is the cover art for the new book.

The CW channel should be all over this book, as a television series is a must. An '80's flashback to the making of Carrie Bradshaw would no doubt be a huge hit.

I Can't Help Myself...

I am always on the lookout for great jewelry pieces. A lot of times if I can't find what I want I'll just make it myself.

However, I recently made a purchase of a beautiful necklace by a local designer, Kelsey Lynn, who has just started working on her jewelry line. Kelsey and I were apart of a trunk show at Clutch and she had been working tirelessly on making new pieces for the show. She posted many of them on Facebook and that is when I saw the owl necklace, "Hoot", and knew I had to have it. As soon as I saw her at the show I asked her if she brought it and I declared I was buying it! I am not the proud owner of "Hoot" - do you love it as much as I do?

The necklace has been described as: "Made with large vintage gold tone owl, small baby owl charm with light brown crystal eyes, draping vintage chain with brown glass crystals, top chain beading with baby owl charm is made of light brown CV crystals, all chains and hardware is vintage and gold tone".

Today I was looking through some emails and saw this cuff which has caught my eye. I doubt there is time to get it as a Christmas gift but maybe for my birthday! I just love the color of the green!

Fashionista University

I got an email yesterday about this new program called Fashionista University in NYC and I am so envious of all the lucky guys and gals that will be able to participate. Not only am I to old to participate (it's for tweens and college age kids) but I also do not live in the big apple... Flying out every Saturday for a class for 3 months just wouldn't work. Believe me, if I could figure a way to get past both obstacles I would so be there!

Fashionista University (www.fashionistauniversity.com), a whole new kind of education for the up-and-coming trendsetters of the fashion world. We would love for you to spread the word and let all the teens, tweens and of course parents know about this amazing program by covering on your site and would gladly send you additional information or photos should you need.

Fashionistas who are on top of the latest trends and are interested in being a part of the buzz, glitz and glamour are perfect for this crash course in the exciting field of public relations. Suburban Booty is a local jewelry line by Melisa Cary and she has made me just crazy for jewelry! You can find her pieces at Luly Yang Couture, Seattle Bride Mag (Fall/winter issue), trunk shows and her online shop.

She tells me "Part of what I do is very refined... Swarovski crystals and pearl pieces and on the flip side some great funky chunky rough stones. I love to mix the rough with the refined and blur the two lines. Rocks from the earth, and high end stones crystals and metals."

Black Friday

I can't think of a time I ever went shopping on Black Friday... I don't mind lines so much but the getting up and shopping at 3am isn't something I would be excited for.

My black Friday, sofar, has consisted of sleeping in till about 9am and then heading out for a coffee and doughnut run. I layed around for about an hour after getting up but after seeing all my Facebook friends talking about their Black Friday deals I decided to start shopping online to see if I could score any. Amazon.com was my first stop and I am proud to say I scored a Real Simple 1yr subscription magazine for $5 (for me), The newest James Bond DVD for $5.49 (for the hubby, shhhh!) and Back to the Future the Trilogy for under $11 (for both of us). (I also bought my dad something but he reads this blog so I won't be sharing that info!) I will continue to search the internet to see what other deals I can find...

I am really curious to know why people do go wait in the long lines at ungodly hours... Are the discounts really that great? Are they selling iPhones for $20? What amazing deals am I missing by staying in bed? Please share your bargains, I really want to know!

Holiday Trunk Show & Pamper Party

I'm really excited to announce that on this Thursday, the 19th, I will be setting up a table and actually selling my jewelry. I have taken about a year or so off from making new pieces due to Urban Fashion Network and all the time I have devoted to the site and the blogs. Now that is not a bad thing as I love every moment I give to UFN but it's time to dust of the ole jewelry skills, make some new pieces and see if anyone is interested. I hope you all are!

So, why am I doing this?
I love retail...30 years at an entrepreneurial department store, many years as a retail coach consulting with entrepreneurs. I have friends and clients who are passionate about their businesses. Several incidents occurred in the last month that got me thinking that "someone should do something about this!"

My To-Do list has included "join the 3/50 project - post on site and FB" since July. At the end of October I went to the site, signed up and started reading. Cinda Baxter's question to retailers hit me between the eyes.

"So, do you want to be around a year from now?"

I was shocked! Then I stopped to consider. What could I do to make a significant difference. I knew that I had a platform and forum to start the conversation and get the word out. I started pounding the pavement, visiting shops, inviting them to attend our meeting on Tuesday, November 24 and now I am hoping that you will feel the same way I do.

I could put this passion and energy to work for a charitable cause, I have done so in the past and will again in the future. I guess it all boils down to 'I Love Retail', it's like a virus for me, it's in my blood and I want it to be vital, healthy, vibrant and fun again! It's theater and drama and dynamic and exciting when it is done well...and so many places I love do it brilliantly.

Some of my friends have said that they "are tired of not shopping". Nothing has changed for them, they are among the 90% still employed, still have credit cards, still have dinner out and spa appointments. But some where along the line, they stopped shopping and started feeling like they needed to do the 'patriotic' thing and follow Suze Orman's advice. I almost came through the television to throttle her last year when she said "stop spending! start saving!" It's good advice, but everything in moderation folks! I actually had someone tell me it was unfashionable to shop!

I believe that even if you have to buy less, you should spend local.

Local business spins the wheels of the economy. It is where the jobs are generated, the sale tax revenue comes from, it creates the neighborhoods. Let's share the love a little this next year and keep our purchases local.

Glitter Sale Preview!

Tonight I was given an exclusive preview of the Glitter Sale goods and ohhh were they good! Myself, and several other bloggers, perused the racks and were squealing with glee over fur coats, dresses, jewelry, shoes... so many lovely things!

Don't worry, we weren't allowed to purchase any items (or else there would be nothing left) but I did snap some pictures of some of my favorites. I plan to head straight to the jewelry and do some damage there. Watch out, I'll be throwing elbows!

All of the money from the sale goes towards the Goodwill job training programs - so feel good knowing you are helping people while also giving these fabulous items a new home. You will be like an eco humanitarian!

Today was my lucky day...

This afternoon I dropped off a pair of jeans at Nordstrom to be patched and just so happened to see a rack of premium denim on sale (I had no idea that stuff EVER went on sale - YAY!). I peaked over and saw the exact pair of jeans I purchased for FULL PRICE a few weeks ago (the blog post all about it). I asked the sales woman if they did price adjustments and she said "of course". I assumed I had to bring them in with my receipt but she said nope, they could look it up with my card right then. She took my card, swiped it and then suddenly I was credited back quite a large sum, large enough I could have almost bought a second pair - I was thrilled!!!

Thank you Nordstrom for being so amazingly awesome!

Girl On Top Re-cap

Last night I drove down to the Westfield Southcenter Mall to attend the Girl On Top event which was hosted by The Limited. I would be lying if I said I had been in a Limited in the last several years but honestly they had some really nice pieces and accessories. They were much nicer than I remember!

Before the event started, myself and other anxious ladies formed a very orderly line outside the store. Several of my blogger friends were there too, which made waiting in line fly by. We were let in at 6pm - there were several friendly store employees to greet up, wine and frozen custard (which was delicious!) to snack on.

Myself and a few other fashion bloggers (Jess, Kristina, Youa, Sydney, Shalonne, Darrah and Kam) had our pictures taken with Nicole Williams, the author of Girl On Top. She was very friendly and easy to chat with. She was dressed in clothing from The Limited and these hot peep toe Christian Louboutin heals.

Once the actual fashion show started, Nicole and another women from The Limited (sorry I didn't write down her name) showed us several looks to wear for interviews, business meetings, general work attire and even taking the look from work to evening. This was where I started to see The Limited in a new light. I took pictures of this portion of the event so go check them out! (The models are store employees).

After the show, they introduced their stylists who came from the home office in Columbus, OH. I immediately grabbed one and asked her for some help on buying a suit as I have not bought one in over 5 years. She was glad to help and assisted me in finding the perfect fit for me. Trying it on took quite awhile as they only have 6 dressing rooms and most women seemed to have the same idea as me. Once I made it into the dressing room one of the stylists came by and helped me with a belt and another shirt... The customer service was amazing - A+! I bought the whole suit, a belt and 2 tops... Oh I forgot to mention it was all 40% off for the event so I feel like I got a great deal! I'm not a person who wears a suit often so I made sure to pick one that I could piece out with my normal clothing - I'm pretty thrilled with my purchase!

They also had this cool obi belt and it sold out at the event - they said it would... I am just going to have to add it to my wish list.

After the event I headed out and grabbed my gift bag that was said to be "valued at over $500" - I must say I do not agree with that statement. The gift bag had some nice items in it but there is no way it's actually valued at $500. It contained the latest Elle magazine, a bottle of lavender lotion, an "emergency kit" from plan b, a few coupons, and a small clutch bag from The Limited with a $19.95 price tag. The items are nice and I'll use them but they are not worth $500, so I'm sorry if that was why you headed down there, but hopefully the event was fun for you too!

Glitter Gala Re-cap

Last night was the 2nd annual Glitter Gala held downtown at the Sheraton. As promised, it was filled with lots of glitter - it's patrons sure know how to bring out the bling!

The fashion show began at 7:30 and the theme was the Golden Era of Film. The models were made up of 60 volunteers along with 2 local celebs! All of the clothing in the show will be available at the Glitter Sale on November 14-15th. They had over 30 movie snipits (Grease, South Pacific, Pretty Woman, Gigi, Some Like it Hot, Breakfast at Tiffany's, etc...) paired with outfits that portrayed the film and the era - it was really well done!

The show ended with the winning designs from the students from the Art Institute - they were given $75, a movie to work with (Twilight, Austin Powers...) and then let loose in the Goodwill store. It's like a mini Project Runway...

My Crafty Sunday...

I had big plans for the day... Movie, coffee, maybe a workout, walk through the market... Instead I never left the house, but once, to walk the dogs.

Don't feel sorry for me though because I ended up turning my Sunday into a day of crafting. First I started with these shadow boxes I bought several weeks ago - I transformed them into 3 boxes representing our 3 favorite cities in Japan: Tokyo, Miyajima and Hiroshima. Then I tried to move onto the actual scrapbooking portion of the project and failed miserably as I just got the first page 96% done. Scrapbooking is a lot harder than I thought. There is a lot of pre-planning that needs to be done so I ended up spending hours doing that. Sooo, by the time I got to the first page I kind of fizzled out.

Lastly in my crafty day, I busted out the ole jewelry supplies and tried to make some new pieces for myself. I was trying to think of colors and outfits I have that need jewelry and came up with 2 necklaces and a bracelet. What do you think?

I'm now exhausted and feel like it's way later than it actually is... Apparently this daylight savings time has thrown me off a bit. That's not a complaint though as I'll take that extra hour to sleep in. I'll take it and I'll savor it.

Shopping Spree

Yesterday my friend Regina and I went to the DFS Closet Treasure Sale at the YWCA downtown and we both only found a scarve each. It was pretty busy and we just weren't in the mood to skower the racks... I had found a cute Banana Republic coat but a button was broken and a seam was coming out and it was listed for $30 - that was more than I wanted to spend for a coat I'd have to perform surgery on. Shoe wise I didn't see anything I needed but there were tons of women with arm loads of clothing and shoes. A definite success for some! I did enjoy the little breakfast of croissants, fruit and OJ. (There was more but those were my highlights)

After the sale we headed down to Nordstrom to try on designer jeans in preperation for the Jean Warehouse Sale that is coming at the end of the month... Our plan backfired as we both walked away with a brand new pair of fancy jeans. I can't say I am sad about it though because I'm excited about my new pair of Hudsons. Regina was thrilled with her new Citizens of Humanity.

After lunch we both went on our seperate ways yet my shopping trip continued... I headed to Northgate planning to just go "look" and kill some time before my movie date with myself. I had seen this pair of boots at Target of all places that were pretty cute and just $34.99. I headed over to Macy's to see what they had and honestly the Target ones were equally as cute and more than half the price. My oddest find was a maternity shirt I bought to wear as a dress - that may sound weird but it really is cute as a dress, I tried it on, I swear. One good thing about buying it was I was able to buy a small since I am in no way preggers. :) I do love Target as you can find some great pieces to mix in to your everyday attire and you'd never know they were from Target!

I headed back to the Northgate Mall and decided to wander a bit more. I found some cute leggings and tights and even bought a Christmas present for my sister-in-law. At about 7:50 I darted out (literally) and headed to the movies - saw "Whip It" - great movie!!

It was a good day!

I was so excited when I was given 2 tickets from a friend to attend the Dress for Success Closet Treasures Sale (YWCA, 1118 5th Ave., Seattle). I volunteered there once to help sort all their clothes so I know first hand they have some amazing hidden treasures.

According to my DailyCandy email they have "labels like Jimmy Choo, Chanel, and Donna Karan mixed in with vintage clothing, jewelry, handbags, and eveningwear all to benefit women’s career development." That excites me!!

Giving In...

I've lived in Seattle now for over 8 years and have never really used an umbrella. It's pretty standard to see most people wearing their REI raincoats vs carrying umbrellas actually. I think it's a "We're to cool to be bothered by this rain" attitude. Besides, we're used to it as it happens pretty often... After going to Japan and seeing all the umbrellas and seeing how you can snag an umbrella from any shop, restaurant or hotel to use for the day, to then replace somewhere else, was amazing. I wish we did that here! But would people be honest enough to drop it off at another location vs their house? I dunno... Would you?

So, anyways after walking to work in the rain and having my jeans, shoes and leather purse get soaked I decided I am gving in, I am buying an umbrella. Now sure, I could go to my local drug store and buy a small cheap one that could fit in my purse but I would rather find a stylish one that I am pleased to carry. Instantly Pare*Umbrella came to mind. It's a local company that I added to Urban Fashion Network 2 years ago.

I've never met the owner/designer, Satoko Kobayashi, but have seen her umbrellas a few times and knew they were stylish and fun. Exactly what I want! So after careful perusal of her catalogue I selected the Love Me Tender umbrella. It has butterflies and I'm a sucker for butterflies!

Now I wait and try to stay dry until it arrives!

Portland Designer: sword+fern jewelry

If you weren't aware, Portland has a slew of amazing designers. Emily Baker, of sword+fern, is among that group - she is one cool chick and it's very easy to see that when checking out her jewelry. Today I was excited to learn of an upcoming event where she and 24 other designers will be featured.

"On Sunday, October 18th, over 25 independent designers will descend upon the Ace Hotel to showcase their talents in the rooms of the 2nd floor, for a fashion showcase called Content, among them the talents of Sword + Fern.

Emily creates her work in her small studio and store in the inner east side of Portland, but takes her inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including nature, art history, and politics.

Content, the event created by a local collective called How We Develop, is an affordable and unique alternative to the more mainstream and inaccessible Portland Fashion Week. Independent clothing designers, and other artisans will be representing Portland’s passionate and varied design community. Milliners will present their work alongside a number of fashion and accessory designers whose speciality run the gamut, to create a stimulating atmosphere.

Since opening her shop and studio a year ago, Baker has found slow and steady success from all walks of life. Her work has been noted on a number of popular blogs, such as design*sponge, etsy, and featured in Levi’s and Frye Boots’ S/S 2010 ad campaign, as well as the new Yacht video, “Psychic City”. Tights, Part Deux

When I become obsessed with something I beat it to death... I know this about myself. If you read my last post about tights you know I'm on a mission for cool tights since returning from Japan.

Last night I was getting my hair done and flipping through magazines. I was reading the October issue of Elle and saw the coolest tights on one of the models somewhere towards the back of the magazine. They were sort of a lavender color but had vertical stripes of gold and pink and maybe blue (if I remember correctly)... they sound summery, I know, but they weren't at all. They were more Fall tones of those colors, if that even makes any sense. They were listed at $16.99. Not great but not terrible. I flipped to the back of the magazine to find out where to buy them and recited it over and over to get it in my memory, Emilio Cavallini.

Once I got home I looked up his website and sadly they were nowhere to be found. I have searched online under his name, I have searched Elle's site... I need to grab that magazine so I at-least have a picture of them. (Anyone have it and could snap a picture for me by chance?) I clicked on Customer Service and sent them an email... Hoping for a happy ending, stay tuned!

Fashion Shows, Blog Lovin' and More...

These last two nights have been so much fun. Last night Youa and I went to the SeattleFashionTV kickoff and networking party. I met some really cool people who, of course, are like minded and into fashion. We ended up staying 2.5 hours just chatting and mingling with new and past friends. We loved it!

Tonight was the Luly Yang "Creation" Fashion Show and the Eco-Lavish Show. We wanted to cover both so we got all dressed up and headed to Luly's show first. This was officially my first Luly Yang show so I was giddy!

The show kicked off with some of the kids from Camp Korey, they were adorable and did such a great job walking the runway. There was a call for donations after the show and it appears they raised a nice amount of money for the camp and the kids.

Next was the customer segment which is where actual Luly Yang customers walked the runway in their custom couture pieces. However, the highlight of the segment was the man who actually got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend while walking the catwalk, the crowd cheered and gave them a standing ovation. It was sweet!

As for the clothing, there was this one dress that caught my eye, which I have posted here for you to enjoy too, and, yes, it's a wedding gown but it is just so beautiful. I love it!! Where I was sitting I could see Luly backstage smoothing out creases and fixing straps, she seemed to be putting so much care into everyone and every piece that went out. It makes sense though, you can see the care and attention to detail she puts into her collections.

At the intermission we slipped out and headed South to Georgetown... We were sad we couldn't see the finale as there was supposedly a secret dress. I'll just have to wait for Seattle Mag or someone to post it. Did you seen it?

Once in Georgetown we headed for the anticipated Eco-Lavish fashion show just in time for the runway show. Youa took her place at the end of the runway to snag some pictures and I grabbed a seat in the back.

First up was Six Degrees with Think Now Jewelry, then Deco Modiste with Flutter Budget Jewelry, then Texture Clothing with Otra Vez Jewelry and the finale designer was Lizzie Parker with Rockstar Jewelry.

There were so many things I wanted from that show - it makes me thankful they weren't setup selling their clothing or I would have bankrupt myself. So many cute dresses, skirts, tops, jewelry... Oh my!

After the show it quickly turned into a fabulous networking opportunity - I chatted with designers, fashion bloggers, models and more.

The evening continued to be a really wonderful time of making new friends and meeting some face-to-face for the first time. Rather than writing this like a dear diary entry just know that there are some amazing designers and bloggers in this city and I am so happy to have met them and look forward to spending more time getting to know them all.

Leggings!

Leggings and tights have been on my mind a lot lately, what can I say, Japan sparked quite a fun idea of outfits I could put together. As soon as I got home I took a fresh new look at my closet and I hope to pair some of my "old" items together and even try to be a bit more adventurous. Sometimes I am a bit self conscience about fashion choices but not really sure why that is... I am hoping Japan awoke a new fashion spirit inside me, I feel like it did!

So anyways, leggings were a hot item there. If women weren't wearing leggings it was tights. After the vogue fashion show at BFW I was excited to see an array of leggings and tights that I can purchase in my own town. I aso plan to look online for some unique finds. Speaking of online, as I opened my email this afternoon I saw a glorious email from Bluefly with the subject line "LEGGINGS - Our love affair continues..." (I've attached the email image for you as well). PERFECT, I can start there!

Do you have a favorite place to buy leggings or tights? A saleswoman at Nordstrom the other day admitted to me she buys her tights at Forever 21 for $4.99. I must go and check them out as they are a great place for cheap staple items like belts, tops, bags, etc.

I would love to hear from you all on this one, help a girl out!!

Stuff The Japanese Like

While on my trip to Japan my husband and I kept a running list of things we noticed the Japanese liked... Not to be confused with the website Stuff White People Like, especially b/c that website made me a bit annoyed (ie. before we went on our trip I read that apparently white people like Japan and REI, 2 places I was headed... I don't want to be considered stereotypical... grrr.)

So anyways, while this is all just my opinion there were just many things we kept seeing over and over again in the cities and towns we visited. By no means is this meant to be negative, we loved Japan and the Japanese and we loved everything they loved!

Stuff The Japanese Seem to like:
- high heels - most women were wearing cute heels or heeled boots, the shoes I saw were just inspirational!
- thigh highs - lots and lots of thigh high socks/stocking/etc. They were always paired with super short skirts, dresses or shorts.
- knee high socks - not always worn with school uniforms, also paired with short skirts, dresses and shorts.
- stirrup tights - I fell in love with this look and saw it everywhere! Women old and young wore these tights. Stirrups were the most common but to be fair tights were also a hot item.
- tights - see above comments
- English writing on shirts - the best versions of these were the ones that were in English but not English that made sense. However there were many shirts on men dn women where there was large printed words usually about love, peace or some sort of combination of the two. We had fun looking for "Engrish" versions of shirts, I brought home 3 as gifts (see above picture).
- boots - as mentioned before, there were some hot boots and had they actually had my size I may have come home with a suitcase full of them!
- mini socks - not sure this is the correct term for them but here in the States I have seen them called peds but have not seen any as cute as the ones in Japan, I bought 2 pairs and WISH I had bought way more! They basically allow you to wear a sock type of material with your heels or flats. In Japan they had so many variations for straps, thong sandals, etc. They are so smart!!
- beer - beer ads are everywhere and in these ads people (typically men) are actually drinking beer or really enjoying it (as seen here). You can buy beer out of a vending machine, drink it on the train, etc... Beer is popular.
- plastic bags and containers - everything comes in some sort of packaging whether it's a small clear bag or in a box. The Japanese are very clean and seem to be pretty eco friendly but all of these bags and containers create a lot of waste. On the flip side their packaging is always really cute so maybe it will make you want to save it and not waste it.
- trains - their trains are amazing. We bought a rail pass and spent so much time using their trains to travel the country. They are clean, easy to figure out, ALWAYS on time and so much more.
- surgical masks - we saw a lot of people wearing the surgical masks while we were there. I wasn't sure if it was due to them being ill or afraid of getting sick from others. Could be a mixture of both.
- hand wipes - you get one with every meal you eat and it comes in a little plastic package bag, unless of course you go somewhere where they give you a warm wash cloth. They may create waste but they are so nice to have!
- alcohol - not the drinking kind but the sanitization kind. When you enter a store, station, hotel or basically anywhere there is a small table with a container on it so you can squirt the alcohol on your hands to then rub in and kill the germs.
- cell phone charms - EVERYONE has a cell phone charm, some have many... I even saw 80 year old men with cute little bear charms on their phones. They basically tell a little story about you and what you like. I saw one that looked like a curious George monkey, a rice bowl, lots of Hello Kitty, bears, a shoe... I could go on!
- anime - it's everywhere... posters, tv, kids bags, etc... Anime is super popular but you should know that, unless you've been living under a rock.
- anything cute - this was one of my favorite things to look for, cute things. Advertisements used cute little characters to get the point across (ie. a dog scooping it's own poop (see picture), and alligator looking sad b/c some kids music on the subway was to loud, all kinds of animals pimping out drinks, food and snacks...
- cell phones - everyone has a cell phone and they are by far cooler than any cell phone I've seen in the States. People are constantly texting, playing games, checking email, watching TV, etc. on their phones.
- short skirts - mentioned earlier
- shorts with tights - mentioned earlier
- being fashionable - "fashionable" can mean many things in Japan, just depends on the style of the person. That being said I saw some really cool fashion choices and some really different choices, none the less, all cool!
- neon signs
- vending machines - they are everywhere!
- sugary drinks - can be purchased in the above vending machines or basically anywhere. I tasted some of the best drinks ever in Japan!
- green tea
- McDonald's/Starbucks
- bikes/scooters - way more popular than cars and apparently not expensive to have
- small cars
- uniforms
- tennis shoes - saw some really cool tennis shoes and so many different styles.
- snacks
- tissues - they hand out tissues on the streets as promotional items - you will never need to buy kleenex again!
- chimes - every subway station has it's own chime and they even sell little charms that have those chimes on them for souvenirs.
- beauty - everything seems to be maintained, organized, cleaned, and the presentation of pretty much everything is just beautiful.
- gardening
- pickled food - you gets lots of picked side items and every one we had was yummy!
- specialty foods - according to hubby most all of the cities have a food specialty so we tried to make sure to taste those when we visited.
- bathhouses (onsen) - the bathhouse is a wonderful experience and seemed to be loved by everyone we encountered while at them.
- cleanliness
- organization

I don't think the Japanese are stereotypical at all and this post isn't meant to make them look that way, just highlight some of the cool things I observed them enjoying on my trip. Thanks for such an amazing time Japan, we can't wait to come back!

Bellevue Fashion Week

Since I missed most of Bellevue Fashion Week (BFW) due to being in Japan, I was only able to attend 2 events this year, Youa attended the rest so check out her blog for the recap of the other shows. The first being the Lululemon Athletica fashion show and the Vogue Front Row Fashion Show. This years events were held at the Hyatt and it turned out to be a great location - parking was free!!

Lululemon Athletica: This show was a bit different than any of the others I have attended in the past. It began with some belly dancers and then moved to 20 minutes of Allison Forsyth, owner of Lululemon Athletica, giving a motivational speech about her time in the Olympics and her mother's battle with cancer. Her story was well received and touching but it was quite a different format for a fashion show. After she was done talking they had 8 or so models come out on both sides of the runway and workout in their clothes. Then they would switch sides. It came down to about 8 different outfits but different workout routines (however they seemed to lean more towards yoga). I liked the clothing and even saw a pair of shorts I need to go buy for my hot yoga classes but the workouts kind of took my attention away from the clothing and more on what was going on... Not sure if that was the point. Each model/athlete was really good at what they were doing - some of the yoga moves were amazing! All in all it wasn't a bad show, just different from what I have experienced before... Here are the pictures from the evening.

Vogue Front Row: The Vogue fashion show was introduced by Anne Vincent, Vogue's merchandising expert. She told us that some of the models were flown in from LA and some were from Seattle. I will say I missed the models that I have seen in years past but this selection of models did a fine job showing off the clothes and strutting their stuff. The selection of clothing was well paired with the different themes of the show. The 80's section of the show reminded me of the color block spread they did in The September Issue (if you haven't seen it you need to!).

I think my favorite part of the entire show was when they flashed past photos from the magazine up before the segment would begin. As for the fashion, tights were the one thing that stood out the most to me - lots and lots of great tights. I will be stocking up on tights for sure, especially after seeing all the great patterns and colors.

Thanks Vogue for adding a new element to our fashion scene! I wonder if they will pair up with Vogue next year or go it alone. In my opinion, BFW doesn't need Vogue to put on a great fashion week. It's definitely a very cool element to have but they have some talented people on their staff and have for the last few years pulled off some amazing shows. So, if Vogue comes back that will be great but if not, no worries, BFW will still be an amazing week of events.

Lastly, thanks BFW for allowing the media to even get swag bags - that is ALWAYS a plus! (7 Salon free haircut, shoe shine kit, spa kit, gift cards and discounts, headband, and much more).

Wow is really all I can say. Tonight was so. much. fun. I just got home from the Neiman Marcus Gala in Bellevue. I had been trying to get a press pass for awhile and finally acquired one! It was worth all the email stalking!

Dawn met me at Neiman Marcus at about 6:45pm. After our media check-in we walked in to the beautiful new Neiman Marcus. I feel the need to mention that all the people greeting us and working in the store were beautiful and well styled. You know who you are Mr. "male model who I have seen before".

First thing was first, we posed for our inaugural picture taken by Team Photogenic and then we grabbed a glass of bubbly.

Oh wait, I am way ahead of myself. The clothing... It was a black tie affair so I picked out a black lace dress I bought at Anthropology years ago... on sale mind you for a ridiculously low price! I was planning on wearing my strappy satin red heels but then Dawn reminded me of "the shoes". "The Shoes" being my $800 Christian Louboutin shoes I won at Barneys... Do you remember that post? I hadn't even thought of them, shame on me, this was the perfect occasion for them. Man was she right. I fit right in! I have never seen so many high end shoes in one place... on people that is as the shoe department actually carried all the high end designers so my statement would be a lie if I didn't mention that.

Ok, so anyways back to the event... Dawn and I headed up to Mariposa's, the Neiman Marcus restaurant/bar, for the VIP party. We found a place to stand so we could people watch but it just so happened to be the perfect place for food as well. Ah the food, everything was so tasty! More champagne please!

At around 7:30, Magic Johnson (Yeah, the basketball player!) and his wife were announced (Cookie Johnson is doing a designer preview tomorrow) and then everyone dispersed into the store to mingle, eat, drink and shop.

Dawn and I carefully examined every floor, tried numerous hors 'd orderves and had another glass of champagne. We chatted with people we knew and didn't know along the way. The clothing and shoes were just amazing. If only I had an endless supply of funds to throw at Neiman Marcus, life would be good... or at least look good.

One of my favorite parts of Neiman's was their shoe department - it was like Barney's on steroids. Barney's has an amazing shoe selection of designer brands but Neimans will definitely be a rival. I guess it's good that one is in Seattle and the other is in Bellevue.

After walking around for 2 hours, we decided to call it a night... actually my feet called it a night, they felt dead, as those shoes were not made for comfort... They look hot though! We were handed an amazing gift bag as we excited - now the excitement will be "what is inside"... (The answer is a Neiman Marcus pop up book, $25 perk card and Anthousa home ambiance perfume with scent sticks.)

P.S. I saw a must have for me - a GIANT book on Barbie... Ignore the fact that it was $500 (GULP!)... I just need it for my collection. Take note Santa!

Jackie Kennedy Photos & More

This morning I got an email from LIFE.com which "features exclusive never-before-published Jackie Kennedy photos. In honor of her wedding anniversary to JFK, Editors share their favorite unpublished frames from the Camelot era."

The photos are being shown "to celebrate the anniversary of the day she became a Kennedy on September 12th 1953, LIFE presents bonus never-before-published shots from its famous coverage of John F. I have a soft spot for Jackie-O. She was so stylish and unique. I saw an exhibit at the MET a few years back which was amazing! It was an exhibit of her clothing while in the white House. Here are some of the photos from that as well.

Lastly, to top it all off, Neiman Marcus sent out an email titled: RETRO FIT: '60s polish with a twist from today. I went to their site to check out the clothing and I feel it fits in perfect with the Jackie-O pictures and her style. So I have to share it with you.

I am so in love with clothing for this era... The dresses, the belts, the coats, the accessories... Love them all!

Fashion Night Out in NYC

Fashion Night Out will be kicking off September 10th in NYC. What is it you ask? It's "a global initiative to promote retail, restore consumer confidence, and celebrate fashion, U.S. and international editions of Vogue are coordinating evening extravaganzas in their respective world fashion capitals.

In the United States, American Vogue has joined with NYC & Company, the City of New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America to enliven again the consumer spirit that churns the economy and boosts the local industry of America’s fashion capital, New York City. Next only to finance, fashion is the second-largest sector of industry in New York City—the headquarters of more than 800 fashion companies employing 175,000 people and generating $10 billion in total wages. At City Hall’s May 20 press conference to announce Fashion’s Night Out, Vera Wang said, "To put it bluntly, if people don’t shop, people lose their jobs."

The first evening of New York Fashion Week, Fashion's Night Out will encompass festivities galore— from inventive window displays to model and celebrity appearances. Champagne may flow; hors d'oeuvres may be passed. Rumors of musical performances, downtown barbecues, shoe capsules, limited-edition rings, and sweepstakes abound. I also found an article about a more frugal approach to Fashion Night Out in NYC. It's worth a read if you're headed to NY anytime soon.

Unfortunately for me (and maybe you), this won't be taking place in Seattle anytime soon (Idea!)... It's apart of the NY Fashion Week which runs from September 10-17th. Next year, next year I have to go!!

Neiman Marcus is Opening Sept 11th!

Today it has been confirmed, I'll be able to cover the Neiman Marcus Gala on Thursday September 10th for UFN! Dawn will be accompanying me so I can take pictures and have someone to help me re-cap the event.

Not only will it be a fetching event (you like that?) but it's also for a good cause. The company will be donating all the money raised from their ticket sales to Hopelink, Overlake Hospital Medical Center and PONCHO. I have learned it is pretty much SOLD OUT!!

From what I have been reading online from a Bellevue Blog, "Bellevue's new store is the only new Neiman Marcus opening this year in the nation, and it's just the 41st store in the country. Read more about why Neiman picked Bellevue in this story by Seattle Times reporter Amy Martinez from last year. "

Also, "The Bellevue store will also feature 166 works of art from 27 artists who reside in, or have strong ties to, the area, the company says. And the Texas company appears to have noticed our passion for recycling. From the press release: "An exciting theme, 'the art of recycled material,' runs throughout the art collection. Various artists have interpreted the use of found and recyclable materials. Their unique and dynamic translations of this theme are exhibited storewide"."

The Product Runway Wrap-up

Last night was the 2nd annual Product Runway. I wasn't sure what to expect since I missed last years event but I will say I was pleasantly surprised. It was very well organized and the people we met who were involved were friendly, helpful and knew what they were doing. It was an amazing evening!

Youa and I went to the dress rehearsal on Thursday night to get a preview of what was in store. I posted those pictures on our UFN Facebook account if you would like to check them out.

Friday night I arrived at the Exhibition Hall at Seattle Center around 6:30pm, checked in as press and then wandered around taking pictures and chatting with other bloggers and people involved in the show. The doors opened at 7pm and men and women started streaming in. Most were dressed up but there were many dressed pretty casual (myself included as I came straight from work). There didn't seem to be a consistent dress code but I'm ok with that - Seattle is a casual city but those who do enjoy dressing up seem to know what they're doing.

For the guests, there were many delicious looking appetizers and a bar where they had a few signature drinks and wine for the evening. They ended up running out of white wine so I had a glass of red. I should have tried a cocktail though as it looked like they were mixed with Dry Soda and I LOVE Dry Soda!

Before the show started, Youa and I went back stage to get some pictures of the models having their hair and makeup done. Seeing the hair and makeup done made the "show" we saw Thursday quite different but that's a given! It was a lot of fun to see the behind the scenes side of the show. I also loved that the "models" were chosen by the firms and weren't "official" models. You wouldn't have known it though as they carried themselves really well and seemed to know what they were doing!

The show began at about 8:30pm and was introduced by two woman involved in the organization, Jill Marasigan and Heather Nye. They then introduced Jack Mackenroth and Kevin Christiana from Project Runway Season 4 as the emcee's for the evening. They were entertaining hosts and pretty cute I must say. The judges were introduced and then the show kicked off (all are pictured above, except Andrea Venecko)!

There were 18 outfits from various architectural firms from Seattle and the Eastside, oh and one from Vancouver. I was thoroughly impressed by what they came up with! They had rules they had to follow and the garment has to remain intact 2 months after the show. Here are the rules.

My favorite dress didn't win, it did win 3rd place though. The winner of the event was beautiful and very wearable - it was a sassy suit that went from office to evening wear. The metal handbag though was my favorite part of the outfit (pictured to the left). I want that bag!

Product Runway is Tomorrow! R U Ready?

Tonight, Youa and I went to watch the dress rehearsal for tomorrow's Product Runway. All I can say is there are some amazing outfits that have been put together! I'd show you the pictures I took but I promised not to... You'll just have to wait... It's worth the wait though. ;)

Product Runway is tomorrow, August 28th, at the Exhibition Hall at Seattle Center (305 Harrison Street)! The emcee's for the evening are Jack Mackenroth and Kevin Christiana from Project Runway season 4 (YAY!). Doors open at 7pm. There will also be a Jason Wu dress in the raffle! (If you didn't know, Jason Wu's was the designer of Michelle Obama's beautiful Inaugural gown).

The Ultimate Ladies Night!

Tonight was the highly anticipated CRAVE Summer Dreams Party at Teatro ZinZanni and it was completely sold out! (Success!) When Youa and I arrived, there was a long line of fashionably dressed women waiting to get in to see what the evening had in store. (Wish I had taken a picture, sorry!)

Melody Biringer, the genius behind CRAVE, has made quite a name for herself and the CRAVE events. They are never a let down and you know that there will be some of the hottest vendors, amazing entertainment, spa treatments by Derby Salon, delicious food (Built Burger was there! LOVE them!) and creative cocktails to satisfy any pallet.

Once in, we mingled around checking out the vendors, said our hellos to friends, sampled cupcakes (it's a hard job but someone has to do it), checked out the racks of adorable dresses from My Orchid (formerly known as Laura Victoria) and basically tried to just take it all in so we could share with you exactly how much fun it was.

Throughout the evening there were dance performances, fashion shows and live music. Something worth mentioning, the hottie firemen (and women) were in the middle of the big top signing their calendars. I am a fan, there, I admitted it.

I have never been to Teatro ZinZanni but it is by far the coolest venue I've been to in quite sometime. (Mental note: check out a performance ASAP! Especially while they are doing the Luly Yang fashion showcase!)

My Inspiration for today...

Tonight I went to see Julie & Julia and found it oddly inspirational and relatable (is that a word?). For those who haven't seen it, it's about a woman trying to find something for herself to be passionate about. She doesn't love her job and she feels she never really finishes anything. The one thing she loves to do is to cook. She decides to cook her way through Julia Child's cookbook and blog about it. (Here is the actual blog).

I love this story, I love it so much! I love that this woman decided to write a blog about something she loved and found her inner writer and ended up writing a book once her blog was noticed and now it's a movie. She took something she loved and it became a career for her.

I used to really want to be a writer when I was a kid. I wrote lots of mystery stories, they probably were terrible, but I enjoyed it. (I wonder if my mom still has those...) I also drew house layouts becuase I wanted to be an architect but I believe that desire faded away... but who knows, maybe it's laying dormant somewhere deep down. I am not considered a writer, I have not been trained as a writer, I can't spell all that great and I think I make up words (see first paragraph). Does that mean I can't be a writer? No, I don't think it does.

It makes me think about that big question that arose many times when we were younger, and for some of us maybe even recently... "What do you want to be when you grow up?" By day I am a designer and I actually enjoy pushing pixels around in Photoshop, it's fun, I like to design and make things... But then I also love writing my blogs and working on my UFN website. I love the local designers and boutiques and want to help them anyway I can... However, those last two things fall more into the hobby category as they don't pay the bills. Maybe someday, still trying to figure that one out.

So, what am I rambling on and on about? What is my point? Well, honestly I don't know. How did you figure out what it was you wanted to do with your life? Are you doing it? If not, what would you want to do?

Now here is one way I can relate to Julie... For quite awhile she felt she was just writing to noone, and maybe I am, but if you're out there I really would love to hear what you have to say. (Dad, I know you're out there and THANK YOU for that! And a BIG thanks to those of you who do comment and come back to see what is going on here, you rock!) ;)

The 2nd annual EcoLavish Fashion show is looking for 2 more eco-friendly designers to add to this year’s fashion show roster. Designers would need to show 8 – 10 looks. Professional hair and make-up is provided, and there is a pre-event photo shoot with acclaimed photographer Kathryn Barnard (for a list of her clients check out her site at www.kathrynbarnardphoto.com).

EcoLavish will be held on October 9. 2009 at The Engine Room in Georgetown Studios with an expected attendance of 200.

The Japan Countdown & Harajuku

I have spent the last few hours researching Japan and reading blog posts from some friends on their recent trip to Japan and I can't even explain how excited I am getting. 64 more days!

Today the topic of Harajuku came up and it has occured to me that I can not write a fashion blog and not go see the Harajuku kids while in Tokyo. That just seems so wrong! Only problem is I will not be in Tokyo on a Sunday so I will have to head over on Saturday morning and HOPE to catch a glimpse of them... I'm sad I can't squeeze Sunday in but our schedule is so packed with places to go and we are trying to limit our time in Tokyo as it's the most expensive city we'll be visiting... But who knows, maybe that will change.

What is Harajuku you may be asking (Dad, I know you are), well here is your answer from Wikipedia:
"Harajuku is the common name for the area around Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, Japan. Every Sunday, young people dressed in a variety of styles including gothic lolita, visual kei, and decora, as well as cosplayers spend the day in Harajuku socializing. The fashion styles of these youths rarely conform to one particular style and are usually a mesh of many. Most young people gather on Jingu Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to the neighboring Meiji Shrine area.

Harajuku is also a fashion capital of the world renowned for unique street fashion. Harajuku street style is promoted in Japanese and international publications such as Kera, Tune, Gothic & Lolita Bible and Fruits. Many prominent designers and fashion ideas have sprung from Harajuku and incorporated themselves into other fashions throughout the world. This Month's D-List Magazine...

I picked up a copy of this months D-List magazine to read on my bus ride home. As I was flipping along I came across a Q&A with local designer Chris Jones of "Like a Rock Star".

It was a great article and you can check it out for yourself on their website. Head on back to page 67! (On the way you'll pass a picture of DJ Darnell Sue and also a blurb about Alix Rose, who apparently writes from D- List magazine... which I did not know. Very cool!)

Attention please!! If you didn't already know, local designer, Crystalyn Kae, has had her handbags make it to the big screen! Congrats girl!

Her Metier Tote and Pleated Clutch were carried by actress Alexie Gilmore, who stars opposite Robin Williams in the independent film "World's Greatest Dad".

The film was shot entirely in Seattle and has been shown at film festivals such as Sundance and SIFF. ("World's Greatest Dad" will open nationwide at select theaters in late August.)

My New Report Shoes

I headed East to Bellevue this morning to check out the Report Shoes Sample Sale and man, am I glad I did!! I was expecting a line of ladies when we arrived at 10am but there weren't any at all. We walked right in and joined the women already shopping around. Thankfully there weren't to many at that time so we got first dibs on alot of cute shoes. (It strated to fill up shortly after though).

There were so many cute pairs for $15/$25 that were once $75 and higher... I ended up buying 4 pairs total but could have easily walked out with more. I had a pair of boots in my possession for quite awhile but decided on a pair of heels instead since I won't be wearing those boots anytime soon... You know, with Summer and all... I also was drooling over 3 pairs of HOT trendy heals from their signature collection that were $70 each but originally in the $200 range. It was really hard to decide!

In the end, I went with the idea of what am I really going to get use out of right now. So, I bought 2 pairs of sandals (Tori by R2 and Rayne by Report Footwear), a pair of grey flats (Laney by Report) and a hot pair of their signature line brown Hearst heals.

There was no tax and the money goes to charity - what could be more perfect when shopping for shoes... or anything for that matter!

The sale ends at 1pm so you still have time to head over if you are reading this right now!!! (520 is closed so expect traffic coming home)

Tonight, in Capitol Hill, Melissa and myself attended the bon voyage party for Bouncing Wall. They have closed thier physical shop but will still be selling online and having Shop Social events. Head on over to their website and sign up for their emails so you'll be in the know! You can't expect me to tell you EVERYTHING!

I was one of the first 30 to RSVP so I snagged a fan-tab-ulous swag bag of all types of goodies! I've laid them out for you and taken a picture for you all to see. I can't help it, I love free stuff! Show me someone who doesn't!

Melissa and I were starving so after a glass of wine and minlging at the party we headed over to the much raved about Marination Mobile. I ordered a miso ginger chicken taco, a kalbi steak taco and a Spam musubi. Melissa had the tofu tacos. It was all so very DELICIOUS!

Melissa had to head out to meet another friend so I went over to Via Tribunali for a glass of Proseco and to look through my swag bag as I hadn't done that yet. After my drink I headed back to the Bouncing Wall party to buy a necklace I had my eye on and couldn't stop thinking about. After I bought it I had the pleasure of meeting the artist, Shayla Rasmussen of Shay D Designs, who was also enjoying the party. So, do you love it?

REPORT Footwear Sample Sale

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of gorgeous shoes by Report and Report signature at local fashion shows. I am so excited to find out that they will be having a Sample Sale (13150 SE 32nd St in Bellevue) on June 20th from 10am - 1pm. Now I can go and pysically check them out for myself and stock up!

All of the net proceeds from the sale will go to New Beginnings which is a non-profit, battered women’s shelter in Seattle. They will be selling women’s shoes in all sizes and styles from REPORT, REPORT Signature, R2 and Rocawear.

Will you be there too?

Ok, so as I was saying, I have been seeing these shoes a lot... The last two places were at the Save the Girls event and in the Vantha Ry fashion show (Blush Event) - (I have linked you to the photos of the events so you can see for yourself if you weren't there).

The Parasol Party Wrap-Up

Tonight, Melissa and I headed East to the Clise Mansion in Redmond to attend the Parasol Party put together by Courtney Russell of Half Past Lavish Events.

The Clise Mansion is tucked away in Marymoore Park, perfectly hidden by lush, bright kelly green trees. The grounds are very well manicured which only enhanced the parties setting. I can see why people get married there!

When we walked in, we were greated by several vendors selling jewelry, candles, adorable aprons, Lush soaps, handbags, cupcake decor and more. There was a table setup with candy and cupcakes - a delicious candy bar, anyone with a sweet tooth's mecca. (Um, yeah, that would be me!)

We headed outside to the bar and tried a pink champagne cocktail and loved EVERY second of it! Mingling ensued and pictures were taken... Women were getting manicures by Julep, foot rubs, massages and more. There were a lot of great things to do!

At around 8:30pm an announcement was made by Courtney for us all to head outside for the show. We all meandered to the back yard to grab our spots for the fashion show. After she gave away all of the door prizes (which I totally did not sign up for - whoops!) the fashion show began.

The first 3 models came out to a lovely French song in very adorable girly aprons made by Party Girl Aprons and the girls were carrying cupcakes decorated by Bella Cupcake Couture. It was hard not to buy one of those aprons at the end of the night - they really are cool!

Next, the Marie Antoinette inspired fashion show began - the girls were wearing clothing from Deco Modiste and carrying parasols by Bella Umbrella. The clothing was really fun and colorful!

It was a very enjoyable show and I'm glad I was able to attend. Thank you Courtney!

Hermes, a luxury label, has started breading their own crocodiles in Australia to meet the demand of their handbags... $60K handbags that is... Really, these people have nothing better to spend their money on than a purse made out of 3-4 crocodiles? Now this, I just don't get.

Bob Mackie and More...

Tonight I was invited by my friend, and FGI cohort, Courtney Russell of Half Past Lavish Events to attend the Spotlight Night for "Catch Me If You Can" at the 5th Ave Theater in Seattle.

I wasn't sure what to expect because I had no idea they did these spotlight events and wasn't sure what they entailed. Plus, it's free so I was even more baffled.

However, I am really happy I went because they introduce you to the people who have come up with the idea, or in this case have taken a story and made it into a musical. I saw the movie and really did enjoy it so I can only imagine I'll feel the same way about the play. We did get to hear a few songs from the performance and I must say they sounded amazing.

Infamous fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie is doing all of the costumes for the musical and they even showed us some of his sketchers... They were awesome! One thing I wish would have happened - more conversation with Bob Mackie. I would have liked it if more questions would have been asked of him, especially about the costumes. Oh well... I'll just have to go see them myself!

If this show takes off it will be another win for Seattle (Hello, Hairspray!) as it is being started here. It will be showing July 23rd - August 16th. I can't wait - the guy who plays Frank Abagnale Jr. (Aaron Tveit) is just a cutie and has an amazing voice. As you can see by the picture I have posted for you - A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!

I'm Famous...

Ok, maybe not, but I was excited to find out my picture made it onto the Seattle Times website via the All You Can Eat blog. (I'm in the 3rd picture).

Hubby and I went to see Anthony Bourdain and Mario Batali speak at the Paramount last week. It was very enjoyable and funny!

My favorite quote of the night was "I can teach a chimp to cook but I can't teach a chimp to love it" - Mario Batali. (That could really apply to anything!)

May I point out that I am wearing a new dress that I had bought that day from Bouncing Wall in QA by a local designer, RiKARiKA Designs. I LOVE the dress. I plan to do a little write up on it and a super cool ring I got from another local designer, Zuz K. Jewelry. stay tuned!!

Marlo Miyashiro of Tote2Go! is a woman of many talents! She has been featured on UFN for her beautiful jewelry but now we are featuring her for her fun and colorful line of reusable shopping bags.

Not only are they ingenious, as they fold up into a small pouch you can carry with you, but they are made from recycled fabrics. Oh and did we mention cute, fun and stylish?

Save The Girls

Tonight was the first annual designer bra show Save "The Girls". The event was held at Spitfire which is typically a trendy sportsbar in Belltown but was transformed to include a pink runway for designer bras which attracted many local fashionistas.

Along with a runway show of uniquely decorated bras, clothing by Opal and handbags by Clutch, they also had a silent auction and raffle which included some great items. Some lucky person even won a flat screen TV!

The bras were decorated by local students from AIS, Movin' 92.5 listeners, local designers, shop owners and many others. The show even highlighted 3 breast cancer survivors (way to go ladies!!)! A Race for the Cure represenative was there to recruit runners and walkers and if you've never done that race I would suggest this be the year for you. It's a great race for an even greater cause. Plus, I was told this will be the last year they will go over the Viaduct - it has great views of the Sound!

I am a big fan of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation which dates back to my college sorority days - they do a lot of amazing things and raise a lot of money for breast cancer research. Audrey Clark & Carli Smith put on an amazing event and I applaud them for it!

Buffalo Exchange Opens in Ballard June 20, 2009

This excites me!! No more having to head over to the UW to drop off clothing for a wee bit of cash.. Now I can just head on over to Ballard!

Hip buy-sell-trade clothing shop opens a second shop in Seattle in mid-June

SEATTLE, WA- Eclectic buy-sell-trade clothing shop Buffalo Exchange announces the opening of its first store in Ballard at 2232 NW Market Street, Seattle, WA 98107 (west of 22nd Avenue NW), phone 206-297-5920, on June 20, 2009. Paid parking is available in the back and the store is convenient to several bus routes. Store hours will be Monday-Saturday 11-7, Sunday 11-6.

The 2,500 square-foot space was secured by Buffalo Exchange on April 20. The shop is at street level in the Ballard Square mini mall, in a neighborhood of independent shops and eateries. The shop features 10-foot high ceilings, floors refinished to look like weathered wood and accent mirrors. There are eight roomy, well-lit dressing rooms and two buy counters, where customers can sell their clothes for cash or trade.

The Ballard location is Buffalo Exchange's second store in Seattle. The U-District location opened in 2001 at 4530 University Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105, phone 206-545-0175. Seattle's Grist.org says of Buffalo Exchange: "your shopping cart is full of only the chicest recycled garb" (Jan 13, 2009) and Buffalo Exchange was listed for Best Vintage and Resale, 2008 Best of Western Washington, King 5 NorthWest News Television in Seattle.

Buffalo Exchange is unique because clothing and accessories are bought, sold and traded directly with store customers. Used clothes can be traded for any item in the store, including jewelry and brand new clothing. The ever-changing inventory includes designer wear, basics, vintage, jeans, leather and one-of-a-kind items. Buffalo Exchange is a sustainable company that works to protect the environment by reusing and recycling clothing. The store donates to local nonprofit agencies in the community through its Tokens for Bags(r) program, which has generated over $300,000 for hundreds of nonprofits since 1994, saving 6 million bags. Shoppers are encouraged to accept a token instead of a bag for purchases, and Buffalo Exchange donates five cents to a charity of the customer's choice. As of May 2009, the resale clothing store chain has 34 stores and 2 franchises in 13 states, with $56.3 million a year in sales. Today I went to see a movie in the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) that was really well done and informative. It was the audience winner of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The movie is The Cove. Is is all about the dolphin slaughter that takes place in Japan every year.

The movie was so moving and I hope that whoever reads this will go see it when available. It is sad to watch but you will leave wanting to do something. Sadly, most of the Japanese population know nothing of this or about the high levels of mercury they are ingesting by eating whale meat (which is sometimes dolphin meat w/o them even knowing).

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, The Cove follows a high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practiced in Taiji, Japan. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide.

The Cove exposes not only the tragedy of dolphin slaughtering in Japan, but also the dangerously high levels of mercury in dolphin meat and seafood, the cruelty in capturing dolphins for entertainment, and the depletion of our ocean’s fisheries by worldwide seafood consumption. We also see how the mandate of the International Whaling Commission has been manipulated by the Japanese Fisheries Agency for its benefit and its subsequent effect on the rest of the world.
